Introduction

The Management Authority of Austria wishes to transmit the following comments to the Parties.

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management as the CITES Management Authority of Austria is pleased to transmit the enclosed three lists (names, accepted names, checklist) for the Bulbophyllum-Checklist, which were produced by the Botanic Garden of Vienna.

This checklist for Bulbophyllum and allied taxa (Orchidaceae) is the result of decisions made at the meetings of the Conference of the Parties to CITES and associated Plants and Nomenclature Committees. This work has been made possible through funds received from the Austrian Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Environment and Water Management.

Part 1 of the checklist consists of all names in alphabetical order (73 p. / 327 kB);

Part 2 of the checklist consists of all accepted names (also in alphabetical order) (151 p. / 422 kB);

Part 3 of the checklist consists of a list of taxa (arranged by countries) (70 p. / 231 kB).

It is important to stress that:

1. Citation of the checklist-MS: Sieder A., Rainer H., Kiehn M. (2005): Draft-CITES checklist for Bulbophyllum and allied taxa (Orchidaceae). Vienna: Botanical Garden of the University of Vienna.

2. This checklist is a pragmatic approach to handle the huge number of species of the Bulbophyllinae in a checklist suitable for the use of non-botanists. Therefore, the genus Bulbophyllum is pragmatically used in a broad sense. This does not express any opinion or preference of the authors as regards the taxonomic rank or circumscription of subdivisions or segregates of the Bulbophyllinae. Such statements will, if at all, only be possible after the finalizing of ongoing molecular studies on the Bulbophyllinae (i.a., by B. Gravendeel, Leiden, and M. Kiehn & G. Fischer, Vienna/Salzburg).

3. If taxa now considered to be members of the Bulbophyllinae have synonyms assigned to genera outside of the Bulbophyllinae, these names are included in the alphabetical list. Such genera outside of the Bulbophyllinae containing erroneously attributed taxa, however, are not given with complete lists of species in the alphabetical list of taxa, but only with the relevant taxa in the context of the Bulbophyllinae.

4. Comments regarding the checklist should be sent, preferably in electronic form, to the botanist of the CITES Nomenclature Committee:
